Workplan

The first stage of the project realisation focused primarily on research and design of models and methods for knowledge acquisition, organization and presentation, and their first prototype verification. The project is designed in such way that in the second stage (2006 - 2007) we will be able to evaluate and improve the designed methods and extend the results to other areas.

Research and design of the models of heterogeneous environment

Time schedule: 09/2004 - 06/2005

This partial task includes research and development of the models of heterogeneous environment which has similar characteristics as the environment of the Internet. The objective is to design a model of environment that would allow to describe all important features, and which would take them into consideration by the processes of data and knowledge acquisition, organization and maintenance.

Research and design of methods of acquisition and organization of knowledge

Time schedule: 10/2004 - 05/2006

This partial task covers research and development of methods of acquisition and organization of knowledge, based on the ontological approaches. The goal is to form a proposition of such a model of knowledge about relevant area of application which would allow to describe all the important features and to take them into consideration in processes of acquisition, organization, maintaining and presentation of data and knowledge. The research will be oriented on the support of organization of data, knowledge and their categorization by ontologies. As the basis for the methods of knowledge acquisition the approaches based on data mining, knowledge discovery, case-based reasoning, rule based reasoning, or the other appropriate approaches will be used.

Research and design of the methods of knowledge maintenance

Time schedule: 01/2006 - 01/2007

This partial task covers research and the development of the methods of knowledge maintenance. The goal of this task is to create a proposition of a method for knowledge maintenance in relevant area of application which would allow effective usage of such knowledge while considering all other important features.

Research and design of the methods of knowledge presentation

Time schedule: 10/2004 - 05/2006

This partial task covers the research and the development of the methods for knowledge presentation. Its aim is to design knowledge presentation method for the relevant area of application, which would allow an effective offer of acquired and retrieved data and knowledge to users.

Design of the software architecture for intelligent knowledge management

Time schedule: 02/2005 - 06/2005

This task embraces research and development of the appropriate structure and with accordance to that also procedures, methods, techniques, and models for realisation of individual subsystems of the proposed component architecture. This activity will provide a basis for specific research and development of methods and tools for further tasks.

Design and development of the corporate memory

Time schedule: 02/2005 - 07/2007

The corporate memory will serve for storing collected data (by the data collection subsystem), for storing ontology models, as well as the knowledge itself represented using their semantic description: the ontology. In this activity, the most appropriate model of such a data store with respect to the possibility of its distributiveness and maximal availability will be researched. The scope of this task embraces also the selection of the most appropriate platform for a real data store implementation. At present, there are several variants also in the form of the open source software. We are considering mainly MySQL and PostgreSQL database engines, and a commercial system Oracle.

Design and development of the components for knowledge acquisition and organization

Time schedule: 07/2005 - 03/2007

This task embraces design and development of the software components of the knowledge acquisition and organisation subsystem based on ontological approaches. The objective is to develop necessary components of this subsystem.

Design and development of the components for semantic annotation

Time schedule: 01/2006 - 08/2007

This partial task includes research and development of methods for semantic annotations of web documents and the design and development of software components responsible for realizing annotations. The goal of this partial task is to develop methods, which are able to find parts of documents that can be mapped to an ontology while marking (annotating) relevant parts of text. This enables better document relevance evaluation according to user query and opens a way to improve navigation in documents.

Design and development of the components for knowledge maintenance

Time schedule: 11/2006 - 08/2007

This task includes design and development of the software components of the knowledge maintenance subsystem. The objective is to develop necessary components of this subsystem.

Design and development of the components for the knowledge presentation

Time schedule: 07/2005 - 03/2007

This task embraces the design and development of the software components of the knowledge presentation subsystem. The objective is to develop the necessary components of this subsystem.

Research and design of processes ensuring data security

Time schedule: 01/2006 - 01/2007

This partial task covers the research and the development of the methods and processes which will ensure appropriate security of data being used. The goal of this task is to create a proposition of such methods for data security ensurance which will allow the presentation of acquired and searched data to the user, while ensuring appropriate security degree.

Integration and validation of the software architecture

Time schedule: 07/2005 - 08/2007

In this task, the integration of the results of the individual tasks into one uniform, consistent, and generically usable framework of tools, methods, and software components for knowledge acquisition, organisation, and maintenance will be ensured.

Specialisation for the pilot application and its evaluation

Time schedule: 09/2005 - 11/2007

The developed software components will be adapted to the chosen pilot application. A part of this activity will be the creation of domain ontologies which will be an extension of the generic ontology developed in the corresponding task.

Design of improved methods and models

Time schedule: 06/2006 - 03/2007

This partial task systematically includes the need for revision of designed solutions in the project. The goal is to improve properties of initially designed methods and models.

Extension of results into other domains

Time schedule: 07/2007 - 11/2007

The goal of this partial task is the exploitation of accomplished results in other domains. A gentle dissemination of our results at relevant forums is planned. Results will be presented on scientific conferences and symposiums. Furthermore, an offer to selected commercial organisations will be made, in order to expoit created methods, tools or even the whole adaptive architecture for knowledge management.
